Projects

The nature and types of projects taken on by a local Rotary Club are a true reflection of the strength of the club and the spirit of Rotary. Projects measure the extent to which a local club and individual Rotarians exemplify a commitment to Rotary's motto - Service Above Self.

Some projects provide needed community services such as recycling projects, environmental cleanup activities, planting trees or developing recreational areas open to the public.   Other projects are used for fundraising to support community projects that require money to complete; to provide financial scholarships for higher education or to make financial donations to organizations that reflect the ideals of Rotary.

Current projects and fund raising activities of the Rotary Club of Malone are:

SCHOLARSHIPS TO GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Every year the Malone Rotary Club awards $4000.00 in scholarships to students graduating from high school.  One thousand dollar ($1000.00) awards are given to three students.  Two $500.00 awards are given to two students entering North Country Community College.  The Club has invested enough money to sustain these yearly scholarships over the foreseeable future.   The Board of Directors have the goal of increasing the investment fund so that we can either award more scholarships each year and/or increase the amount of each scholarship.

ROTARY RECREATION PARK

Rotary Lake and the park was started by members of the Malone Rotary Club in 1946. Expansion, growth and work at the park is an ongoing priority. The latest work at the park was the paving of the walking trail.

CARDBOARD RECYCLING PROGRAM

Corrugated cardboard is collected on the second Saturday of each month at the A&M Beverages warehouse on Boyer Avenue in Malone (across from fairgrounds on East Main Street).  Recycling cardboard is an outgrowth of an earlier Rotary project of monthly paper drives.

Cardboard is sold. The profits are put in an investment fund and the interest earned from the fund is used to award financial scholarships to local high school graduates to further their education.

The bales in the picture weigh about 900 pounds each and are shipped by the tractor trailer load - about 32 - 35 bales per load.

BUILDING NEW HOMES -Malone Rotary - BOCES House Project

Last House built by Rotary - BOCES

The Malone Rotary Club partners with local BOCES - North Franklin Education Center (NFEC) to build new homes.     The club pays for the lot and all materials and the students from NFEC provide much of the labor.  This is an important part of their learning experience during their last two years of their high school training at a vocational technical school.  The Club borrows money at a local bank to help pay for materials.   The finished house is sold on the open market.   Some of  the profits are used to help finance the next house.   And some of the profits are contributed to local organizations and activities that support the ideals of Rotary.

The latest new home was started over the winter months at the NFEC.  Work onsite started in late April 2005.   The projected completion date is the spring/summer of 2006.

ANNUAL SPAGHETTI DINNER AND SILENT AUCTION

This event is held on the first Thursday in April every year.  The specialty of this dinner is the spaghetti sauce.   Each Rotarian prepares one gallon of sauce which is all mixed together for a "one of a kind" spaghetti sauce.   Rotarians solicit donations from local businesses to sell in the silent auction.   Many Rotarians also donate items to sell.   The profit from the 2005 Dinner and Auction was slightly over $3,000.00.

ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY PROGRAM

Four times a year, usually May, June, August and September, Malone Rotarians pick up trash along a four mile stretch of highway south on Finney Blvd. from the Main Street intersection.
